Terms of Use

These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your use of the Voca software ("the Software"). By downloading, installing, or using the Software, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Software.

This is a plain-language summary of a simple arrangement: Voca is free, open-source software provided as-is, you can use it freely, and we can't take responsibility for what it does on your machine. The full terms follow.

1. License to use

Voca is open-source software released under the MIT License (see the LICENSE file). Subject to that license, you may use, copy, modify, and distribute the Software free of charge. These Terms describe the practical conditions of using the official builds; the MIT License is the authoritative legal grant.

2. Open-source components

The Software incorporates third-party open-source components, each governed by its own license. Those licenses (not these Terms) control your rights and obligations with respect to those components. A list of the components and their licenses is provided in ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS.md. By using the Software you also agree to comply with those licenses.

3. Acceptable use

You agree to use the Software lawfully. In particular, you agree not to:

  • use it to record or transcribe people without any consent required by the laws that apply to you;
  • use it for any unlawful purpose, or to infringe anyone's rights;
  • misrepresent the origin of the Software or remove its license and copyright notices when redistributing it.

You are responsible for how you use the Software and for the content you create with it.

4. Transcription accuracy is not guaranteed

Speech recognition is inherently imperfect. The Software may mishear words, add or drop text, mis-format output, or produce errors — especially with accents, background noise, technical terms, or non-default languages and models. Do not rely on transcription accuracy for any critical, legal, medical, safety, or financial purpose without reviewing the output yourself. You are responsible for checking and correcting anything the Software produces.

5. "As is" — no warranty

THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. We do not warrant that the Software will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure, or that it will meet your requirements.

The current builds are not yet code-signed or notarized (see SECURITY.md). You install and run them at your own discretion.

6. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, OR GOODWILL, ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH YOUR USE OF (OR INABILITY TO USE) THE SOFTWARE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. Because the Software is provided free of charge, our total aggregate liability to you for all claims relating to the Software shall not exceed the amount you paid for it (which is zero).

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or liabilities, so some of the above may not apply to you. In that case, those exclusions apply only to the extent permitted by law.

7. Privacy

Your use of the Software is also subject to our Privacy Policy (legal/privacy.md), which explains that transcription happens entirely on your device and that the only data the Software sends off-device is the optional update check (app version, OS, and CPU architecture).

8. Updates and availability

The Software may offer to check for and download updates (see the Privacy Policy for what that involves and how to disable it). We may release, change, or discontinue versions of the Software at any time. We are not obligated to provide support, maintenance, or future versions.

9. Governing law

Voca is free, open-source software offered to users worldwide. No specific governing-law jurisdiction is designated. You are responsible for using the Software in compliance with the laws that apply to you in your own location. The disclaimers and limitations of liability in these Terms apply to the fullest extent permitted by the mandatory laws that apply to you; nothing here removes rights you have under those laws that cannot be waived.

10. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Changes take effect when the updated Terms are published, with a revised effective date. Continued use of the Software after changes means you accept the updated Terms.
